HOBA METEORITE
THE HOBA METEORITE
EXCEPTIONAL HOBA SPECIMENS
TOP Meteorite is excited to offer exceptional and rarely seen Hoba slices cut from a recently acquired 1.263 Kg piece of the Hoba IVB iron meteorite.
It was a stunning specimens with stellar provenance from the estate of Dr. Frederrick Bogumil Lorch, former Chairman and Managing director of the South African Minerals Corporation.
We traveled to Cape Town, S.A. to finalize the deal with the representatives liquidating Dr. Lorch's estate, and took possession of this once in a lifetime specimen of the world's largest known meteorite in mid December of 2018.
When we saw the original label from Dr. Lorch's collection still attached to the specimen, as well as a copy of his collection list mentioning a "piece sawn off the Meteorite of Grootfontein S.W.A...", we knew we had something extra special.
The Hoba meteorite is thought to be the world's largest single meteorite, estimated to mass over 60 tons. It was discovered in 1920 on the Hoba West farm, not far from the city of Gootfontein in Namibia. Too large to move, a stone amphitheater was built around it.
TOP Meteorite decided to present this exceptional specimen as it was acquired, without any restoration. We will work with whomever acquires it to either do a full or partial restoration, or deliver it as is.
This is the original specimen of the Hoba Meteorite that these slices were cut from. ~ 1Kg of this specimen was acquired by a museum and the remaining mass was cut into smaller pieces for the collector and research communities.
