Top Meteorite

  • $ 495.00

On Offer:  33.0g Unclassified HED meteorite fragment with remaining black fusion crust.
Type: Unclassified HED
Parent Body: Vesta or Vestoid
Description:  33.0 gram fragment of an utterly amazing unclassified HED meteorite (very likely eucrite) with fusion crust. This is very likely a eucrite, but without EMP analysis I cannot be certain. Fusion crust and lack of chondrules say "achondrite" and ourextensive experience with large quantities of classified HED specimens, tells us this unclassified meteorite is a eucrite.

The HED Meteorites: The HED meteorite group is so named for the three types of meteorites that comprise the group; Howardite, Eucrite and Diogenite. The Eucrite and Diogenite are meteorites with distinct lithologies, while the Howardite is a mix of the Eucrite and Diogenite lithologies. The HEDs are differentiated achondritic meteorites previously thought to originate from Vesta, but now leading researchers are starting to think they originated from a Vesta-like asteroid (not Vesta itself) that was destroyed long ago. This is because we also find iron meteorites with similar isotopic genetics as the HED, leading researchers to conclude the HED meteorites come from a large Vestan-like body that was in a large enough collision to also liberate pat or all of its metal core.
