The data from the stable oxygen isotope analysis for this Martian meteorite plot starts nicely on the Martian fractionation line (MFL) with other established Martian shergottites and nakhlites and then starts to trend slightly down and to the right of the MFL. See orange X's in the oxygen isotope plot from the Meteoritical Bulletin below.

| Writeup | Writeup from MB 114: Northwest Africa 17754 (NWA 17754) Algeria Purchased: 2025 Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased by Ali Fettouh from a meteorite dealer in Ouargla, Algeria, May 4, 2025. Physical characteristics: Four pieces, 1038, 926, 207, and 132 g, and many small fragments. Fusion crusted, freshly broken surface reveals gray-green pyroxene crystals and spectacularly shiny maskelynite. Friable. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Electron microprobe analysis and reflected light microscopy of a polished mount show this meteorite to be a basaltic shergottite. The two major phases in this meteorite are clinopyroxene and maskelynite. Ubiquitous minor phases are titanomagnetite, ilmenite, and troilite. The clinopyroxene has a modal abundance of approximately 60%, with significant core to rim zoning indicating an igneous crystallization trend with Mg-rich pigeonite cores, mantled by augite, and rimmed with ferropigeonite. Clinopyroxene average grain sizes are approximately 300-500 μm. Maskelynite has modal abundances of approximately 30%, and most grains are irregular shaped to equant and 100-300 μm in size. Geochemistry: (M. Spilde, UNM) Clinopyroxene Fs39.8±12.3Wo18.9±9.6, Fe/Mn=32±4, n=7; plagioclase An51.0±3.4Ab47.5±3.7, n=5. Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): 7 acid-washed fragments analyzed by laser fluorination gave δ18O=5.586, 5.044, 5.254, 5.104, 5.670, 5.867, 5.251; δ17O= 3.161, 2.913, 3.029, 2.956, 3.212, 3.301, 3.008; Δ17O= 0.211, 0.249, 0.255, 0.261, 0.218, 0.203, 0.236 (linearized, all per mil, TFL slope=0.528). Classification: Evolved basaltic shergottite. The oxygen isotopic composition has a trend slightly off the Martian fractionation line. Specimens: 20 g plus a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Ali Fettouh holds the main mass. |
