Description: This 1.6 gram viel of the CI1 Oued Chebeika 002 carbonaceous chondrite meteorite contains ~ 200+ individual fragments (actually more, I just stopped counting at 200!), each with the potential resale value of $25 to $50 each as micro specimen examples.
Oued Chebieka 002 is an example of one of the rarest and most sought after carbonaceous chondrite sub-classes in existence. Often referred to as the "holy grail" of meteorites, the CI1 has a petrologic grade of "1", hence the 1 in the CI1 sub class name. This designation, unlike the partially altered CM2 chondrites, indicates that the CI1 carbonaceous chondrites have been almost entirely altered by indigenous water while still on its parent asteroid.
The CI1 chondrites are physical proof that at least some of the C-type asteroids within our solar system have or have had liquid water in them, and that this water has altered the silicates of the CI1 into hydrous phyllosilicates as well as the kamacite into magnetite framboids. These types of hydrous alterations are well established indicators that the material in the chondrite has been exposed to liquid water while in situ within its parent asteroid.
