Description: A 70.5 gram piece of Mars ejected by a meteorite impacting the surface of the Red Planet and hurling it to Earth. A lovely 70.5 gram specimen of a part of the SNC group of martian meteorites known as "Shergottite" NWA 13227 showing shock veins.

Shock veins occur when there is a powerful collision in space involving two large objects like asteroids and planets. These collisions produce enough pressure and heat to melt portions of the rock, which then re-solidify into a vein-shaped pattern.

Purchased: 2019 Nov

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Mark Lyon in November 2019 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Coarse grained (gabbroic) assemblage of zoned clinopyroxene (up to 3.5 mm), olivine (some as inclusions in clinopyroxene) and curvilinear, lath-like maskelynite (~15 vol.%), together with accessory Mg-ilmenite, Cr-ulvöspinel, pyrrhotite, baddeleyite, merrillite and chlorapatite. Minor veinlets of secondary calcite are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa_35.5-51.6, FeO/MnO = 50-55, N = 11), pigeonite cores (Fs_25.6-28.2Wo_5.2-9.3, FeO/MnO = 28-33, N = 6), subcalcic augite rims (Fs_21.5-21.6Wo_31.3-31.8; Fs_28.0Wo_26.9; FeO/MnO = 27-30, N = 3), pigeonite rims (Fs_34.6-36.6Wo_12.3-15.7, FeO/MnO = 30-33, N = 3), maskelynite (An_51.7-57.1Or_1.8-2.8, N = 4).

Classification: Shergottite (olivine gabbroic).

Specimens: 21.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Lyon.
