It's the Heaviest Recovered Meteorite Mass on Earth: With a Total Known Weight (TKW) of over 100 tonnes, Campo del Cielo represents the heaviest combined mass of meteorite fragments ever recovered from a single fall.
The Atmospheric Explosion: The parent asteroid—estimated at over 4 meters in diameter—entered Earth's atmosphere between 4,200 and 4,700 years ago (approx. 2200–2700 BCE). Due to its high internal inclusion density, structural weak points caused the body to fragment explosively in the upper atmosphere, showering the landscape with thousands of individual meteorites.
The Crater Field: The meteorite fall produced at least 26 distinct impact craters in a primary field measuring 3 km × 18.5 km. However, the smaller fragments scattered across a strewn field spanning more than 60 km. The largest single crater measures 115 m × 91 meters in diameter.
Carbon-14 Dating: Scientists estimated the impact era of 4,200 and 4,700 years ago by analyzing samples of charcoal and charred wood trapped beneath the soil layers immediately under the meteorite fragments.
Field of the Sky: The strewn field is located in northern Argentina on the border of Chaco and Santiago del Estero provinces. The site was known to local indigenous peoples as "Piguem Nonralta", which the Spanish translated as Campo del Cielo "Field of the Sky".
1576 is when Europeans learned about it: Indigenous oral histories recorded a time when "fire fell from the sky," and the indigenous peoples of the area had long used the native iron to forge tools and weapons. As such, while the official discovery date is recorded as being the year 1576, it is well documented that locals had known of it long before that. So, contrary to this well established and often republished "find" date (we are also guilty of this in the listing data above), it is very likely that it was a meteorite fall witnessed by the indigenous population at the time of impact. It is also very likely that at least some of it was subsequently found by locals shortly after it hit the ground four and half millennia ago.
Massive Individual Fragments: The Campo Del Cielo strewn field contains two of the largest single-piece meteorites on Earth. Both fragments rank among the heaviest individual meteorites ever found, behind the 60-tonne Hoba meteorite in Namibia.
