Find: 2026 Mar 11
Country: Tiris Zemmour, Mauritania
Description: 24.8 gram end piece of an amazing HED Diogenite-Olivine achondritic meteorite with official name Ain Ben Tili 008. This specimen is a beautiful example of an olivine-bearing diogenite ejected from the upper mantle or lower crust of the asteroid Vesta (or one of the associated V-type Vestoids). As an end piece of the specimen used for the classification, this specimen offers both a polished view of the interior olivine and pyroxene crystals as well as the natural exterior of the meteorite.
Provenance and Background: This 24.8g specimen is from the 57 gram stone analyzed and classified by the Laboratory for Meteorite Analysis and classification (LMAC) at the EPMA laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder. A 26.75g type specimen from the same 57g stone is held by the Yale Peabody Museum, at Yale University. Only two stones of Ain Ben Tili 008 were recovered by Aomar Yauda Moulud during his 2026 expedition in Mauritania. The 57g stone used for the analysis and classification (where this specimen was taken from), and a single 1680g stone representing the main mass. The 1,680 gram (1.68 kg) main mass remains with Aomar Yauda Moulud, and is available for purchase through Top Meteorite upon request.

On 11 March, they found a 1680 g stone with a 57 g stone sitting beside it. Physical characteristics: Two dark-brown stones with cm-sized irregular dark patches and sub-mm to cm-sized vesicles. Half of the larger stone was polished by ventifaction, and the other side displays what appears to be a lighter reddish-brown colored remnant fusion crust. Saw cut reveals a fine-grained crystalline interior with some larger grains up to 5 mm. Petrography: (D. Dickens, LMAC) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows the sample is a cataclastic breccia consisting predominantly of fractured low-Ca pyroxene and olivine, with ubiquitous minor intercumulus plagioclase. Olivine occurs as poikilitic inclusions within low-Ca pyroxene. Low-Ca pyroxene displays pronounced compositional zoning with Fe-enriched rims. Accessory phases include chromite and rare silica polymorphs. Geochemistry: (D. Dickens, LMAC and A. S. Bell, UColo) Olivine Fa32.5±1.1 (n=18). Low-Ca pyroxene cores Fs17.3±1.4,Wo0.6±0.1, FeO/MnO = 28.9 (n=15); rims Fs28.2±2.8,Wo3.5±1.1, FeO/MnO = 27.6 (n=8). Plagioclase An87.6±2.5Ab11.8±2.3Or0.7±0.4 (N=17).
