On Offer: 6.5g R Chondrite- R3/4 breccia NWA 11304
Description: 6.5 gram R3/4 breccia unpolished end piece of the R type chondrite NWA 11304 meteorite.
Official Name: NWA 11304
Classification: Rumuruti Type (R) - R3/4 breccia
General Information: The R chondrite, as it is most commonly referred to, is one of the 5 known classes of chondritic meteorites: Ordinary, Carbonaceous, Enstatite (E), Rumuruti (R), and Kakangari (K). The R chondrite is the most oxidized of all the chondrites, and is the rarest of the chondrite classes with the exception for the K chondrite.  This the R3/4 breccia displays three distinct lithologies: black, light grey, and brown. Depending on the specimen, it may have one, two or all three visible in a single stone.

Northwest Africa 11304 (NWA 11304)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2017 April

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R4)

History: Purchased by Dustin Dickens in April 2017 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) The specimen is a breccia mostly composed of well-formed, relatively small chondrules (apparent diameter 250±150 µm, N = 12) in a finer grained matrix (~30 vol.%), but some petrologically-similar, angular lithic clasts (including type 3 and type 4 clasts) are also present. Both olivine and orthopyroxene have very magnesian cores, but the predominant mafic minerals are much more ferroan. Other minerals are clinopyroxene, sodic plagioclase, pentlandite, pyrrhotite and magnetite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (cores Fa1.0-1.2; predominantly Fa39.1-41.6; N = 4), orthopyroxene (core Fs4.5Wo0.4; mantle Fs16.3Wo2.7), clinopyroxene (Fs11.0-12.4Wo45.5-41.7, N = 2), plagioclase (Ab85.7An12.3Or14.6).

Classification: R4. May contain R3 material.

Specimens: 21.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. D. Dickens.
