  • $7,580.00

On Offer: 542.6g LL7 poikiloblastic chondrite meteorite classified as NWA 17585

Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (LL7)

Year found: 2025

Country: Morocco

Description: This is the main mass of NWA 17585 LL7, one of my most recent classifications and my first ever LL7. In fact, it's the first 7 of any type I've classified, and was a bit more involved than the many other equilibrated chondrites I've classified in the past.  It is a fully equilibrated and recrystallized poikiloblastic chondrite with discontinuous plagioclase networks and no detectable chondrules. The petrographic designation of 7 is relatively rare, and caps off one end of the 3 through 7 petrologic designation spectrum for chondrites. 3.00 being completely unequilibrated and 7 being completely equilibrated. This meteorite represents all of the remaining mass for this classification, with the remainder being used to make the probe mount for the analysis and classification, as well as the 20g type repository sample which is held at TCU.

Backscatter Electron Images (BSE) taken during the analysis and classification of this LL7 meteorite. The buyer will receive digital copies of the BSE images, along with a physical signed certificate of authenticity (COA).

Northwest Africa 17585 (NWA 17585)

Morocco

Purchased: 2025 Jan

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL7)

History: A single stone was purchased in January 2025 by an anonymous collector in Morocco from El Houssini Abdurrahim.

Physical characteristics: A single dark stone of approximately 583 g, with a mostly wind polished exterior. Some weathered black fusion crust remains. Saw cut reveals a dark coarse grained brecciated interior with occasional small metal blebs.

Petrography: (D. Dickens, LMAC) Examination of a polished microprobe mount and BSE images shows a breccia with a recrystallized texture of low-Ca pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, olivine, and Ca-pyroxene grains ranging from 25 µm to >100 µm. Plagioclase occurs as discontinuous networks. Plagioclase and olivine are often poikilitically enclosed by low-Ca pyroxene. Abundant triple junctions are present. Ubiquitous metal and sulfides are found interstitially and embedded throughout the silicates, often at submicron sizes. No chondrules or relict chondrules were observed. Accessory phases include kamacite, taenite, and troilite.

Geochemistry: (D. Dickens, LMAC) Olivine Fa30.5±0.3, range Fa30.1-30.9, n=7; low-Ca pyroxene Fs24.8±0.1Wo2.0±0.1, range Fs24.3-25.1Wo1.8-2.1, n=6; feldspar An12.4±1.0Or5.2±2.0, n=7.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL7) Type 7 based on recrystallized texture, discontinuous plagioclase networks, abundant triple junctions, and Wo content in low-Ca pyroxene.
